  MACHINABILITY OF AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

During every kind of machining process, the contact between cutting tool and chip occurs under high temperature and pressure.
The machinability of a steel is a combination of two factors and in general depends on:

  • Cutting parameters in terms of rigidity of tooling, cutting fluids and sturdiness of fixture.
  • Steel grade

The machinability of steel is always a combination of two factors:  the cutting tool and the steel selected.

AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

The difficulties in the machinability of austenitic stainless steels are well known.
Compared to ferritic and martensitic steels, typical austenitic alloys have:

  MARTENSITIC-FERRITIC AUSTENITIC
Work hardening rate - +
Toughness - +
Ductility - +
Friction coefficient - +
Thermal conductivity + -

All these factors cause:

  • Long chips
  • Chips wrap up around the tools
  • Higher temperature developed in tools
  • Large built-up edges
  • Work hardened cut surface, due to deformation and mechanical stress
